¿Cómo aprendiste a bailar?

Tarde en la vida. Yo estudié en un colegio francés en Venezuela. Los franceses no se destacan por el baile. Así que cuando ingrese a la universidad venezolana tuve que aprender a bailar con mis amigos para poder integrarme y disfrutar de las fiestas. Le agarré el gusto y empecé a tomar talleres aquí y allá. Lo que empezó como un elemento de sobrevivencia social se convirtió en un una pasión de vida.



¿Te gusta enseñar a bailar? ¿Por qué?

Déjame empezar por decirte por qué me gusta bailar. En mi vida personal he utilizado el baile como un hilo conductor para conectar con mis distintas afiliaciones culturales, la francesa, la libanesa y la venezolana. En mi carrera académica, he encontrado que el baile puede ser utilizado como un elemento integrador, muy útil en una sociedad tan segmentada como la estadounidense, sobre todo en las escuelas públicas. Utilicé el baile en mi tesis doctoral para interesar a los estudiantes en el español y promover la interacción y el diálogo entre grupos culturales que normalmente no comparten.

¿Que si me gusta enseñar?

Por supuesto. Me gusta transmitir esa alegría que produce el moverse al son de la música. Me gusta que los participantes experimenten la diversidad a través del baile, una experiencia

cultural muy enriquecedora.

¿Cómo es la importancia del baile en la cultura latinoamericana?

El baile es un elemento de gran importancia en la cultura latinoamericana, en sociedades colectivistas como las nuestras en oposición a sociedades individualistas como la norteamericana. A través del baile se produce

un ambiente de comunidad, una interacción intergeneracional y por ende una integración de todos sus participantes.

La distancia física puede ser abrumadora para los anglosajones. A través del baile se comparte y expresa una alegría colectiva a través del movimientoy la expresión corporal.

¿Qué baile es más fácil de aprender entre el público norte americano? ¿Y el más difícil?

Siempre que enseño al público norteamericano, empiezo por enseñar el merengue, un baile dominicano muy popular en el Caribe y muy fácil de aprender. Si puedes caminar, puedes bailar el merengue. Además la gente lo disfruta por su ritmo pegadizo. El más difícil… bueno, depende del estudiante. Puede resultar difícil captar el ritmo de la salsa. La variedad de los pasos del tango argentino puede ser un poco abrumadora para un principiante.

What is your favorite dance?

The Argentine tango for its intimate and deep character. For me, tango is "poetry moving"

How did you learn to dance?

Late in life. I studied at a French school in Venezuela. The French do not stand out because of the dance. So when I entered the Venezuelan university I had to learn to dance with my friends to be able to integrate and enjoy the holidays. I grabbed my taste and started taking workshops here and there. What began as an element of social survival became a life passion.

Do you like to teach dancing? Why?

Let me start by telling you why I like to dance. In my personal life I have used dance as a common thread

to connect with my different cultural affiliations, the French, the Lebanese and the Venezuelan. In my academic career, I have found that dance can be used as an integrating element, very useful in a society as segmented as the American one, especially in public schools. I used dance in my doctoral thesis to interest students in Spanish and promote interaction and dialogue between cultural groups that do not normally share.

What if I like to teach?

Of course. I like to transmit that joy that comes from moving to the music. I like that the participants experience diversity through dance, an experience very enriching cultural

How is the importance of dance in Latin American culture?

The dance is an element of great importance in the Latin American culture, in collectivist societies like ours in opposition to individualistic societies like the North American one. Through dance occurs a community atmosphere, an intergenerational interaction and therefore an integration of all its participants. The physical distance can be overwhelming for the Anglo-Saxons. Through dance, a collective joy is shared and expressed through movement and corporal expression.

What dance is easier to learn among the American public? And the most difficult?

Whenever I teach the American public, I start teaching merengue, a Dominican dance that is very popular in the Caribbean and very easy to learn. If you can walk, you can dance the merengue. Besides, people enjoy it because of its catchy rhythm. The most difficult ... well, it depends on the student. It can be difficult to pick up the rhythm of salsa. The variety of Argentine tango steps can be a bit overwhelming for a beginner.
