Milonga Tropical, Tango and Latin Showcase and Dance party,  opens its new season at Hotel Indigo Rialto Room at 6:30p on Wednesday, November 1, 2023.

Fuad Elhage, a lecturer of Spanish for the professions in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, was recognized for his “Diversity through Dance” workshop, a class offered for the Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion. Learning and Development and the Equal Opportunity Office were recognized for their partnership with Certificate in Diversity and Inclusion courses.

Students can receive 3 hours credit taking his semester long SPAN 4080 Diversity Through Dance course. Read more about the course. 

On Saturday evening, hundreds of spectators gathered at The Classic Center to attend the annual Dancing with the Athens Stars. The fundraising event is thrown by Project Safe, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to helping those impacted by domestic violence.

After being postponed for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fundraiser made its return with many well-dressed attendees of all ages coming out to support. Athens Mayor Kelly Girtz and his wife Andrea Griffith-Girtz hosted the show alongside a panel of three judges.

The University of Georgia Tango Club is an on-campus organization made to promote cultural diversity through music and dancing. The club is based on Argentine tango, and is open to all students, faculty and Athens residents.

Fuad Elhage, the founder of the club, is also a Spanish lecturer at the UGA. He started the club in 2006.

Milonga Tropical returns to Athens on October 28, 2021 at Club Rialto, the event venue on the lower level of Hotel Indigo in Downtown Athens.   

Marcos Cotlar contributed his time to document Athens' First Milonga event on August 23, 2019. This is an event sponsored by Cine, UGA Tango Club, and was organized by Fuad Elhage and Stephanie Lynn. Athens Tango Project provided live Tango music for Dancing. Savie Arnold from Sweetie Pie by Savie donated snacks for participants. 

Milonga Tropical was created as a way for others to experience the most elegant form of dance. Tango is a form of magic.... 

While Tango is the most beautiful of all dances, it is more than just a dance. "It's a feeling that is danced". It teaches one how to relate to another in body and mind and how to stayed connected. 

Saturday night in downtown Athens could not be more eventful. While G-day was winding down, the crowds around downtown were not. In The Classic Center, there were young gymnasts and their moms preparing for a competition and teen girls in sparkly long dresses walking arm in arm with their senior prom dates before getting to the theater for Project Safe’s annual fundraising dance competition, Dancing with the Athens Stars.

In its eighth year, “Dancing With The Athens Stars” remains a powerful fundraising tool for Project Safe’s efforts to end domestic violence in the community, as this year’s event, held Saturday night at The Classic Center in downtown Athens, brought in $137,570.
